Most people know that you can save money on your heating bills this winter by lowering the temperature on your thermostat. By lowering the temperature 1 degree you can save 1-3%. To save even more money, drop the temperature by 5-10 degree while you sleep, you can save 10-15%! But, you may not realize the other benefits involved.
Below 75 Degrees: Extend the Life of Plants Plants need less water when they're cool. If you're heading out of town make sure to drop the temperature below 75 so you don't come home to dried up leaves. Below 70 Degrees: Lose Weight To get rid of a few pounds, lower your thermostat below 70. When the temperature drops, your body expends more energy to stay warm so you burn more calories. You can burn around 100 per day and over a few weeks this can build up to 3,500 calories. Below 65 Degrees: Extend the Life of Your Refrigerator When your home is cooler, this important appliance doesn't have to work as hard to keep your food cool. This can lead to lower maintenance issues and a longer lifespan. Below 65 Degrees: Get a Great Night's Sleep If you drop the temperature by five degrees when you head to bed, you will get a better night's sleep. This happens because when you go to sleep, your "set point" (the temperature your brain needs to reach before going to sleep) is lowered. If your room is too hot, you'll have trouble reaching this point to go to sleep.
